I want to become a professional tennis player. This is not a metaphor or a fictional character, but a goal I continue to pursue in my own life. I am aware of how improbable it is. Making art is a way to affirm the act of attempting it.
My ongoing project, He wanna be a good tennis player., brings together songs, one-person music theatre, moving images, installations, comedy and tennis training. Tennis is not merely the subject represented in these works: the continued attempt to become a player is a necessary condition for the work to exist.
I make performances and music in order to keep pursuing tennis; at the same time, the practice of tennis changes the music and performances I make. The work unfolds through that reciprocal relationship, without assuming that success is guaranteed.
